FAQ

parents watching kids karate classes

Parents are encouraged to watch our classes. We don’t have any secrets.

When can I join?
We run our program in line with the school term. Tis make it easy for families who like to travel or go away in school holidays. You can join up anytime during the school term on the day of the week the classes are run.

How do I get started?
We make it super easy. Fill out our free trial booking form or just arrive at the scheduled time listed under Sydney karate Locations on this website. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before class to fill out a standard athletic waiver form with a parent or legal guardian. You do not need to call ahead to book in. Please read Sensei Matt’s post on Your Child’s First Day of Martial Arts.

What does it cost?
New students receive a free trial class! – BOOK FREE TRIAL HERE, After which, You can select one of our tailored memberships to continue on – whether that be “Totally Casual” or a “Karate Addict”. One of Sydney’s best-value kids martial arts clubs, with memberships from $23/week, unlimited classes available, and family discounts for 3+ participants.

How do I pay?
All locations accept cash (preferred), and also accept card payments; card payment fees may apply. Fees should be paid prior to the start of each class, Auto Debit is also available for your convenience.

What if I just want to watch? You are welcome to watch before joining, and parents are encouraged to watch our karate classes every week. We do not offer lock-in contracts so there is no risk.

What should my child wear?
Loose fitting clothing and soft-soled shoes for the feet are recommended. Karate uniforms may be purchased at any time but are not mandatory.

What happens in the class?
Your child can play with the other students until the class begins. We then bow in and start the class with a fun warm up game, giving each student a great chance to get to know their new classmates. We usually start the class in a circle so that all students feel equal and they are all in the “front” of the class. We keep them moving so there is no time for boredom!

Do children stay with this program
Our retention rates are very high, up to 90%. The reason is that we make the classes fun and exciting for kids. The games are designed to build self-defence skills, but enable the kids to have a lot of fun in the process.

What if my child was sick and missed class?
Make-up classes can be arranged. Please talk to your instructor about this as soon as possible.

What type of martial arts is taught?
Our foundation is the Kenpo Freestyle system, based primarily on American Kenpo Karate, with emphasis on self-defence, kickboxing, boxing, and grappling. There is weapons training at the higher levels.

What is the belt system?
In the Kenpo Freestyle system, belts range from white, through yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, and black.

What do gradings cost?
Our grading fees are included in the class fee, which is unusual for a martial arts organisation–and a big plus!

Friendly yet disciplined approach towards karate at Australia’s Youth has helped enormously. It enabled Mihir to build a sense of belonging and improved his motivation to excel. It’s amazing how learning the Martial Arts helps build confidence and improve overall personality.

I like Karate because it is really fun and I love going on the weekend to see all my friends and Senseis. Karate makes me feel safe because I don’t worry about bullies at school because I know they can’t really hurt me.Tyvian-Macfarlne-Kenpo-Freestyle-Sydney

The confidence karate has given Tyvian is amazing. He is takes pride in himself and he has matured. The focus, confidence and discipline he has gained through karate has transferred to other areas of his life such as educational tasks, looking after younger children both in and out of his family and demonstrating empathy for others.Robert-Macfarlane

Look at what you have achieved Matt, we can’t thank you enough for your contribution to shaping these two young men. We are often complimented about the maturity of the boys and we know their Karate has played an important part in developing that maturity. Brings a tear to my eye!
